Almost 17,000 tonnes of CO₂ saved per year: CLASSEN energy management is among the best

Kaisersesch / Baruth. The CLASSEN Group, leading manufacturer of high-quality laminate and PVC-free polymer flooring, has again been certified for its sustainable energy management. The corresponding certificates were awarded by independent testing institutes following plant audits in Kaisersesch and Baruth / Mark. They confirm that CLASSEN is continuously improving its energy efficiency in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001:2018, is thus continuously reducing its energy costs specifically and is sustainably reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For the Kaisersesch site, Silvio Esser, auditor of TÜV AUSTRIA CERT GmbH, said: "I can confirm that the management system of Akzenta GmbH (CLASSEN Group) is currently one of the best systems I evaluate as an auditor in terms of management documentation and effectiveness of the implemented measures."

With its "CO₂ ZERO" project, the CLASSEN Group has set itself the goal of soon producing completely CO₂ -neutral. As usual, CLASSEN employees at the Kaisersesch plant are looking specifically for ways to save energy and then implementing them. For example, LED lighting was installed in the production halls, cooling units that are not needed are now automatically switched off over the weekend and various media pipes are better insulated. CLASSEN obtains 100 per cent of its electricity at the Kaisersesch site from hydropower. This saved around 12,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2020. This is roughly equivalent to the amount of CO₂ emissions from almost 2,400 flights from Frankfurt to Sydney and back.

The audit report of the GUT Certifizierungsgesellschaft für Managementsysteme mbH for the Baruth / Mark site states: "Strengths are the unchanged detailed evaluation and examination of the legal requirements as well as the high level of commitment and know-how of the employees and the management with regard to the energy optimisation of the facilities." Further highlighted were new measures such as heat recovery and the eddy current mill, with which previously unused dusts from production can be processed and fed back into production. These dusts could not be reused before and were taken to waste disposal by truck. In total, more than 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions could be saved in Baruth in 2020. Also compared to air travel, this corresponds to the amount of CO₂ emissions from around 800 flights from Frankfurt to Sydney and back.

That is why we are constantly looking for new ways to produce more efficiently and save energy at our Kaisersesch and Baruth sites. Our renewed certifications for both sites are proof of the success of the efforts of all our colleagues."

The requirements for certification according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018 include that a company creates concrete energy targets and action plans as well as monitors its energy consumption in detail. CLASSEN operates around 500 measuring points at the Baruth plant and more than 150 in Kaisersesch to continuously measure its energy consumption.

CLASSEN: Anniversary for the largest laminate plant in the world

Baruth / Mark. Vor 20 Jahren, im Herbst 2001, eröffnete die CLASSEN Gruppe ihr Werk in Baruth (Brandenburg). Begonnen wurde damals mit 120 Mitarbeitern. Heute ist es das größte zusammenhängende Laminatwerk der Welt. Rund 850 Mitarbeiter produzieren in Baruth bis zu 80 Millionen Quadratmeter hochwertige Laminatböden im Jahr für den weltweiten Markt. Das bedeutet, dass alle sieben Sekunden Laminat in der Größe eines 20-Quadratmeter-Wohnzimmers die Produktion verlässt. Bis zum Jahr 2020 wurde die erste Milliarde Quadratmeter Laminat produziert, das ist eine Menge, mit der man die gesamte Insel Rügen auslegen könnte.

Four days of downtime at CLASSEN: an extraordinary achievement

Gewartet und modifiziert wurde die Zerfaserungsanlage mit 10-Megawatt-Antriebsmotor für die Produktionslinie, außerdem wurden die Lager aller großen Maschinen gewechselt. Dabei kamen auch Schwerlastkräne für Traglasten bis 300 Tonnen zum Einsatz. Eine solche Wartungsunterbrechung ist alle 1,5 bis zwei Jahre notwendig. So kann Fiberboard seine Produktionsanlagen mit einer durchschnittlichen Verfügbarkeit von 95 Prozent betreiben.
